My research is focused on the long-standing problem of understanding strong coupling dynamics in gauge theory. At strong coupling, Yang-Mills theories are expected to admit a complementary description in terms of stringy degrees of freedom, but the diculty is to identify the corresponding dual string theory. A major breakthrough in this direction was the formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the conjecture that the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is dual to the type IIB superstring theory on AdS background. Solving gauge theory in the strong coupling regime amounts to quantization of the above mentioned string theory, a problem which still awaits its solution. Recently, I have been interested in the emergence of integrability on both sides of the correspondence. Integrability allows one to unify the gauge and string descriptions and offers the possibility of computing various quantities in planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for arbitrary values of the coupling constant. In this framework, I have been studying the strong coupling expansion of some observables as predicted by integrability and have tried to understand the mechanism responsible for the transition from the strong to weak coupling regime.
