In 1879 David Hughes, a music professor, discovered that an induction coil could send signals up to five hundred yards.  He correctly thought this represented electromagnetic waves but couldn't convince the brass of the Royal Society and thus failed to publish his results.  Read the original Electrician account of this well documented story.  This is a PDF file.
