In May, 1565, the Ottoman Sultan, Suleyman the Magnificent, having tired of the Knights of Malta poaching off his fleet, sent what was probably the largest armada in history against the island. The fleet consisted of some 200 ships, carrying about 40,000 fighting men and 70 siege cannon. Opposing this invasion were about 650 Knights and between 6,000 and 8,000 mercenaries and Maltese irregulars. After four months of the most vicious seige warfare, in which everything was tried, the Turks gave up, having lost about 25,000 men to disease and fighting. I have recently completed a very large historical novel describing the events leading to the Siege and the Siege itself. Currently I am marketing the novel and have uploaded the first two chapters.
